The EJ family of engines is a series of four-stroke engines manufactured by Subaru. Initially introduced in 1989, they were intended as a replacement to the EA engine. With all engines being 16-valve horizontal flat-fours, the EJ series is the mainstay of the entire engine line of Subaru. There are configurations for both SOHC and DOHC, as well as naturally aspirated and turbocharged versions, from 96 to 320 horsepower.

The EJ253 is a SOHC engine with an output of 162 horsepower and 167 pound feet of torque. There’s a MAF sensor to regulate the intake volume, and 2006 models also have I-Active valves which boost output to 175 horsepower. Engines that are equipped with PZEV from 2007 and up have an output of 173 horsepower. If you’re looking for an EJ253 engine for sale, make sure you get the right one for your vehicle, as it was available for quite a few models.
